Take Care of Your Teeth and Gums

Routine dental cleanings and checkups are among the most effective ways to protect your overall oral health. These visits support not only your teeth, but also your gums, soft tissues, and the health of your mouth as a whole. Professional cleanings remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria that contribute to tooth decay, gum disease, and persistent bad breath. Dental hygienists can reach areas that daily brushing and flossing often miss, providing a deeper clean and helping you maintain fresher breath and healthier gums. Regular exams also give your dentist and hygienist the opportunity to detect early warning signs of problems and prevent them from developing into painful or costly treatments.

Professional cleanings provide a naturally brighter smile by reducing surface stains from coffee, tea, and other foods, without the need for bleaching treatments.

Benefits of Regular Dental Cleanings and Checkups

  • Eliminate plaque before it damages your enamel.
  • Remove tartar build-up that can lead to gum disease.
  • Reduce surface stains from food and drinks for a brighter smile.
  • Identify receding gums, chips, cracks, or other early signs of disease and infection.

What Happens During a Teeth Cleaning?

Gum Health

Healthy gums are the foundation of a strong smile. During your cleaning, we carefully examine your gums, tongue, teeth, and soft tissues with special attention to the gum line. This helps us detect early signs of inflammation, infection, or gum disease. Your gums support your teeth, so monitoring them closely is one of the most important parts of preventive care.

Plaque and Tartar Removal

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on teeth every day. When not removed by brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar, which is much more difficult to clean and often forms along the gumline. Using specialized tools, your hygienist gently removes plaque and tartar from hard-to-reach areas. Afterward, your teeth are polished to reduce surface stains and leave your smile feeling fresh and smooth.

Dental Examination

Once your teeth are cleaned, the dentist examines your mouth, reviews your chart and X-rays, and checks for areas of concern. This is the perfect opportunity to catch problems early and discuss ways to prevent or reverse tooth decay and gum disease. The dentist may recommend further treatment if needed and will answer any questions about sensitivity, discomfort, or other dental concerns.

Cost of Teeth Cleaning in Gravenhurst

Routine checkups and cleanings are one of the most effective ways to prevent dental problems, which is why most insurance plans cover them every six months. For patients without insurance, the cost generally ranges from $120 to $300 or more, especially if it is your first cleaning or the first in several years.

What Affects the Cost of Treatment?

  • Your current oral health.
  • Whether new X-rays are needed.
  • The amount of time required by the dental team.
  • The equipment and supplies needed for your specific care.

Routine cleanings and exams are a cornerstone of preventive dentistry. By scheduling them regularly, you reduce the risk of invasive treatments, avoid unexpected dental pain, and protect both your smile and overall health.

Even with excellent home care, plaque and tartar can build up in hard-to-reach areas. A hygienist uses specialized tools to remove this buildup and protect against gum disease.

Your gums and teeth are examined, plaque and tartar are removed, your teeth are polished, and the dentist checks for signs of decay, gum disease, or other concerns.

Yes. By removing plaque and tartar, routine cleanings reduce the risk of gum inflammation and infection, which are the first stages of gum disease.

If issues such as cavities, gum disease, or damaged teeth are found, the dentist will explain your options. In some cases, treatments like dental crowns or fillings may be recommended to restore your oral health.

I had a great experience with Dr Ali and his dental assistant. I was very nervous when I first went in for the root canal, but it turns out that barely felt the freezing and they were both very comforting throughout the whole procedure.

I had a regularly scheduled dental exam and cleaning today. The office called and texted to remind me of the appointment and to add more time to the appointment time. I was greeted by the friendly front office staff and taken in by the dental hygienist (Sandy) promptly. She updated my X-rays and 3D imaging and explained those to me patiently and thoroughly. Her skills for the dental hygiene work are very good and she is gentle. After the dental hygiene work was completed, Dr. Cook saw me and reviewed my dental health with me.
