Signs And Symptoms Of Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity occurs when the inner nerves of a tooth are exposed and become irritated. Healthy teeth are protected by a strong layer of enamel. Beneath the enamel lies dentin and, at the centre, the pulp, which contains the tooth’s nerve and blood supply. When enamel thins or dentin is exposed, the nerve loses its protection, leading to pain or discomfort.

Common Causes of Enamel Damage

  • Eating or drinking acidic foods and beverages, especially before bed.
  • Skipping regular brushing and flossing.
  • Brushing too hard or using a stiff-bristled toothbrush.
  • Trying to use professional dental tools at home.
  • Health conditions such as bulimia or acid reflux that expose teeth to stomach acid.
  • Untreated gum disease or gum recession.
  • Cracked, chipped, or damaged teeth.
  • Dental cavities left untreated.
  • Using tobacco, cannabis, or vaping products.
  • Grinding or clenching your teeth.
  • Overusing teeth-whitening products.

What You Can Do About Sensitive Teeth

If you’re dealing with tooth sensitivity, the best next step is to book an appointment with our dental team. We will identify the cause of your discomfort and recommend the most effective treatment to protect your teeth and relieve pain.

Identify the Cause

During your visit, we’ll talk with you about your symptoms and how often they occur. We may take new X-rays and carefully examine your teeth and gums. Simple tests, such as gently tapping a tooth or applying a cold stimulus, help us determine the exact source of sensitivity.

Professional Treatment Options

Depending on what we find, we can treat damaged or decayed teeth with fillings, crowns, or other restorative procedures. If your enamel is worn down, we offer in-office treatments to strengthen and protect it. We’ll explain each option so you can make the best choice for your smile.

Personalized Home-Care Guidance

To help prevent future issues, we’ll give you tailored advice on protecting your enamel, managing sensitivity, and maintaining a healthy mouth. Dr. Priyanka Mandal and the team at Gravenhurst Family Dental Care provide compassionate, professional care to relieve tooth sensitivity and keep your teeth strong and pain-free.

Our goal is to understand not only the health of your mouth but also how everything works together to support your smile. Before recommending a treatment plan, we take the time to learn about your concerns, your goals, and the results you hope to achieve. This allows us to create care that is personalized, effective, and focused on helping you maintain a healthy and confident smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tooth sensitivity occurs when enamel wears down or gums recede, exposing the underlying dentin and nerve endings. Common causes include teeth grinding, gum disease, and frequent consumption of acidic foods or drinks.

Yes. After an exam, we can recommend treatments such as fluoride applications, dental fillings, or dental crowns to repair damage and protect the nerves.

During your visit, we perform a thorough exam, check for cavities or cracks, and may take X-rays. Tests like gentle tapping or a cold stimulus help identify the exact tooth causing discomfort.

Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, desensitizing toothpaste, and avoiding acidic foods can help. However, an exam is important to ensure there isn’t a more serious underlying issue.

Yes, whitening treatments can temporarily heighten sensitivity. We can recommend professional teeth whitening options and aftercare tips to minimize discomfort.

Gum recession exposes the tooth’s root surface, which is not protected by enamel and can lead to pain. Regular cleanings and proper periodontal care help protect your gums.

I had a great experience with Dr Ali and his dental assistant. I was very nervous when I first went in for the root canal, but it turns out that barely felt the freezing and they were both very comforting throughout the whole procedure.

I had a regularly scheduled dental exam and cleaning today. The office called and texted to remind me of the appointment and to add more time to the appointment time. I was greeted by the friendly front office staff and taken in by the dental hygienist (Sandy) promptly. She updated my X-rays and 3D imaging and explained those to me patiently and thoroughly. Her skills for the dental hygiene work are very good and she is gentle. After the dental hygiene work was completed, Dr. Cook saw me and reviewed my dental health with me.
